I have recently added a new feature to the website, Academic Alley, the store here at Sententias. I’ll be developing and adding more stuff later on but I have a partnership with Amazon, which allows me to do this. There will be two major sections to the store: the academic aesthetics and books. The academic aesthetics has items similar to what I have and use that add to the picturesque academic persona and atmosphere. For instance, in me office at home I have a desk surrounded by bookshelves with my personal library. Some decor I have in the office is some large canvas paintings (say, 5′ x 4′), two different types of globes (I’ll keep one in the office and the other one elsewhere in the house), a recliner off to the side with a lamp for some casual reading, a love-seat and coffee table for a comfortable atmosphere, my wife’s desk, and seven tobacco pipes on a pipe rack. The pipes simply add to the atmosphere and actually keep that rich smell in the air. They’re my great-grandfather’s, some of which are over seventy years old. I also have a book holder, which displays old books I own. I usually have one of two I display: a 1901 copy of Josephus’ works and a copy of a catechism from the 1800′s. I also have my diplomas/degrees on display along with other awards on my wall.
Those are just a few examples of creating an academic environment in your home office, which helps promote a studious state of mind and atmosphere. I’ve picked several like-items that help promote that kind of scene for your office. There are also fashion elements that give your ideal style such as the shawl-collar cardigan, a nice leather watch, a brief case or leather messenger bag, etc.
The second aspect of Academic Alley is the books. I’ve provided a list of books necessary for a well-rounded library in philosophy, theology, and science. I’ll be breaking the books down by category as I develop the store in more detail.
In the comment section, please feel free to list any items I (or even link them in the comment) I should add. Please share your academic aesthetic ideas, what you have/use, and books you find necessary for a good personal library. Feel free to check it out in the Sententias Store tab at the top of the screen below the banner.
